Defend Our Fire Service: FBU General Secretary to Address Mass Meetings

HAMPSHIRE, ENGLAND--(Marketwire - March 15, 2011) - On the 21st March firefighters from across the region will be descending upon Buckinghamshire and Hampshire to attend mass meetings organised by the Fire Brigades Union. FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack will lead a debate highlighting the savage attack on the fire and rescue services and how the FBU can respond on behalf of firefighters and the public to defend our service, which is held in such high regard.

FBU Regional Secretary Ricky Matthews said "Firefighters are drawn to the service with an overwhelming desire to help others and will during their careers see indescribable horrors. We have always felt valued for the service we provide, however there is growing anger as firefighters see the real effects of government funding cuts becoming a reality on the ground. Clearly the pre-election pledges of cuts being fair and front-line services being protected were untrue.

"Firefighters are quite rightly saying enough is enough.

"As a direct consequence of the cuts, the fire and rescue service is under the most serious attack in living memory. The cuts arising from the Comprehensive Spending Review threaten to devastate the frontline fire and rescue service across the region. There will be fewer officers available to provide incident command, compromising firefighter safety. There are already fewer firefighters on fire engines, putting pressure on safe systems of work. Reductions in crew numbers have led to specialist rescue vehicles such as the Heavy Rescue Unit and turntable ladders left idly on fire stations with no crew available when an emergency comes in. Secret discussions are also taking place to close 999 emergency control rooms, losing the local link between the fire officer en-route and the emergency caller on the line. Years of local knowledge will be lost.

Fire stations have closed and been put up for sale.

"These cuts to vital frontline resources are leading to delayed attendance at emergency incidents, meaning a more dangerous working environment for firefighters and ultimately delivering a worse service to the public.

"The FBU is a lone voice campaigning to defend the fire service, to protect firefighters and the public we serve. In November last year the FBU held the largest ever lobby of parliament with hundreds of firefighters from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Oxfordshire travelling to Westminster to lobby local MPs.

"Following The FBU General Secretary's meetings, on 26 March, firefighters and their families from across the region will once again be marching in London with the TUC and other unions to demonstrate the anger felt at government slashing our and other vital frontline services. The FBU General Secretary will discuss why it is so important that firefighters are at the forefront."
