Definiens Launches Cellenger® Application - First Automated Multivariate Image Analysis (MVA)™ for Cell-Based Assays

MUNICH, Germany--(CCNMatthews - Feb 1, 2006) -

A Platform Independent, Easy To Use, Flexible and Complex Biology Enabling Image Analysis Application based on Definiens ground breaking Cognition Network Technology (CNT)™

Definiens AG, a global leader in Enterprise Image Intelligence Automation™, announced today the release of Cellenger®, its first automated Multivariate Image Analysis(MVA)™ system for cell-based assays - that provides a seamless integration from Observation to Screening.

Cellenger® represents a new generation of image intelligence applications in cellular image analysis. It generates biologically relevant information from images required to reduce risk through translational science in safety assessment. To meet the demand in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors Cellenger® is designed to be a flexible and easy to use image analysis application.

Cellenger® is a set of workflow tools and modular image analysis components which, when combined with any of the Definiens Enterprise Client Applications, provides a complete system for working with cell based assays. Due to its flexible and modular architecture Cellenger® can be adopted simultaneously in multiple environments to augment the workflow from a single user to a multiple users in an enterprise wide environment.

In comparison to other conventional pixel-based technology, Cellenger® uses its novel object-oriented, context-based, hierarchical network process to analyze images.

Cellenger® MVA™ improves safety through reduction in attrition rate and liability risk, identifies more lead compounds with higher quality by delivering consistent and quality results in shorter time and at lower cost.

Cellenger® goes beyond conventional methods to analyze and understand complex images. Its unmatched accuracy and quality of image analysis allow harnessing meaningful information that is biologically relevant.

"We are very excited to introduce our first Enterprise Image Intelligence Application to the market. With Cellenger® MVA™ both experts and non-experts can equally access and utilize the power of Definiens image analysis technology at their finger tips. Cellenger® MVA's™ multivariate and modular approach takes Image Analysis away from today's limitations and opens a new door in the assessment of safety and toxicity of therapeutic candidates, for example a cell body can be detected automatically without the presence of a nucleus", says Thomas Heydler, President and CEO of Definiens, AG

Cellenger® is powerful enough to address the most complex image analysis needs and flexible enough to cover all assay development needs. All applications are packed into smart units that are available in a unique modular system.

"Definiens Cellenger® software for MVA incorporates the essential tools for scientists doing high content image analysis. By using object oriented image analysis, the software provides elegant solutions to complex image analysis problems. Development of image analysis protocols through the use of tunable modules, while maintaining the possibility to also write your own customized algorithms, enables both intermediate users and experts to benefit from the software. Equipped with a user-friendly interface including plate-view and quick-view of dose response curves, Definiens Cellenger® software provides an optimal combination of flexibility and user friendliness." Says Arne Heydorn, Senior Scientist at BioImage, A/S

Cellenger® supports all common plate and image formats. It has built-in loading templates and functionalities for seamless import and export of image and image data. Cellenger® is instrument and process independent and thus provides users the power to combine image data from multiple platforms and multiple experiments seamlessly from assay development through full screening.

Based on Definiens proprietary Cognition Network Technology™ Cellenger® is a general framework to map and program human cognitive processes to develop powerful image analysis applications to automate the analysis of complex biological systems.

Cellenger® MVA™ is Definiens one of many applications in the family of Enterprise Image Intelligence ™ automation line of products that are planned for future releases.

Additional highlighted functionalities of Cellenger® MVA™ include a development environment for the expert users, a customizable connector builder for non-standard image acquisition devices, integration with databases for seamless import and export of images and image data and deployment of the application in both stand alone and distributed environments. The worldwide shipping of Cellenger® MVA™ is planned to start in the second quarter of 2006.
