DEKALB® Brand Seed Launches Second Edition of 5-Bean Pod Challenge!

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - July 25, 2011) - The second edition of the DEKALB 5-Bean Pod Challenge gets underway on August 1, 2011 and runs until October 3, 2011. The contest, which is open to soybean farmers across Canada, is designed to encourage them to experience first-hand the benefits of Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybean technology, by scouting their fields for 5-bean pods of Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans.

Last year was the first year for the DEKALB 5-Bean Pod Challenge and it resulted in more than 325 eligible entries. Don Swain of Blackstock, Ontario took home the grand prize.

Patrick Comte, DEKALB marketing manager for Western Canada, says the main objective with the DEKALB 5-Bean Pod Challenge is to create a hands-on way that users of this breakthrough technology can tangibly see and experience its benefits.

"This technology is all about a significant increase in yield potential, as evidenced by more beans produced, which translates into more bushels in the bin and more profit potential," said Comte.

With more than five years of research data demonstrating that Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans offer yield improvements compared to original Roundup Ready® soybeans, Comte says the DEKALB 5-Bean Pod Challenge is an excellent way to demonstrate those benefits to growers at the field level.

There are a few changes in the second year of the DEKALB 5-Bean Pod Challenge, most notably an increase in the number of prizes. Eligible entrants to the 2011 edition of the DEKALB 5-Bean Pod Challenge will be vying for 4 main prizes – three prizes of one skid of DEKALB® Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans and one prize of a $5,000 travel voucher. Farmers can also instantly win prizes of $1,000 worth of DEKALB® Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans for finding a 6-bean pod.

The 2012 growing season will see the DEKALB soybean product lineup converted 100 percent to Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® technology. And with several new varieties in lower heat units, that will be good news for Manitoba soybean growers.

"We have converted our whole lineup to this new technology platform," said Comte, noting that DEKALB will have 16 varieties available for 2012 planting, of which seven are new varieties. Varieties will range from as low as 2325CHU up to 3300CHU.
