Delaware North Companies' The Ahwahnee Named 26th Favorite Building in America

BUFFALO, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- February 9, 2007 -- Delaware North Companies' The Ahwahnee received special recognition as the 26th most popular building in America according to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive for the American Institute of Architects. Located in California's Yosemite Valley, The Ahwahnee's rank in the study gives it similar value to such architectural feats as the Brooklyn Bridge, Washington Monument and the White House.

"You really don't need a study or survey to tell you The Ahwahnee is an architectural treasure in America. Simply being in and around the property gives you the idea you're in a special place," stated Kevin Kelly, president of Delaware North Companies Parks and Resorts. "That being said, we're proud to have the building's importance validated by the results of this study. It's a great honor."

The Ahwahnee is one of numerous properties Delaware North Companies operates at Yosemite National Park, including the Wawona Hotel, Tenaya Lodge and Yosemite Lodge at the Falls. Architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood began designing the resort in 1925. Intending to create a building located near some of Yosemite's most stunning views, including the Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and Glacier Point, Underwood achieved just that on his way to laying the groundwork for an architectural masterpiece which officially opened in July of 1927.

Today, The Ahwahnee has 99 guest rooms and 24 cottages for visitors to enjoy. Visitors to the historic hotel find themselves immersed in Art Deco, Native American and Middle-Eastern designs. They can also take advantage of the resort's world-class amenities which include the Ahwahnee Dining Room, Solarium, Winter Club Room and other conference spaces.

"When you consider where the Ahwahnee is located in Yosemite Valley, the building's rich cultural history and all that it has to realize this is a remarkable American landmark," Kelly added. "Delaware North Companies takes great pride in its properties and resorts and The Ahwahnee is evidence of that."

Now recognized as the 26th most important building in America, the Ahwahnee Hotel finds itself in strong company. The Empire State Building and the White House finished first and second in the survey, respectively. Other national landmarks included were the Chrysler Building, Sears Tower and Gateway Arch.
