Deloitte: Shaping Canadian Business Since 1858

Deloitte celebrates rare business milestone with its 150th anniversary

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 6, 2008) - In 1858, Philip Simpson Ross, a young immigrant to Canada, changed the direction of his career. Although he was operating a successful ship's chandlery on Montreal's shores, he expanded his business to offer accounting and customs services. A few years later he left his mercantile career to focus exclusively on accounting.

Through hundreds of mergers and 150 years, that sole proprietorship grew to be Deloitte, Canada's largest professional services firm, with more than 7,600 people in offices from St. John's, Newfoundland to Vancouver, British Columbia.

"Philip S. Ross saw an opportunity to offer more to his clients, and seized it," says Alan MacGibbon, Deloitte's Managing Partner and Chief Executive. "That same attitude really captures what Deloitte is all about today - serving our clients and helping them anticipate and address their future needs."

While today's firm no longer bears the Ross name, the Ross spirit remains. It's there in the firm's national identity, in its commitment to its professions, in its passion for supporting Canadian business, in the talent of its people. This week, Deloitte kicks off a 150th anniversary celebration that will see the launch of an online chronology of its history, get its people involved in creating a virtual time capsule, and tell the story of the people and events that created Deloitte in Canada and helped shape Canadian business for a century-and-a-half.
