Demand for Rental Units Higher in Windsor

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 9, 2010) - Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation released its annual Rental Market Report for the Windsor CMA today. Highlights of the 2010 Rental Market Report for the CMA are as follows:

  • The vacancy rate for privately-initiated rental apartments in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) was 10.9 per cent in 2010, down from 13.0 per cent in October 2009.
  • The vacancy rate decreased for one and two bedroom units.
  • On the basis of a sample of structures common to both the 2009 and 2010 surveys, the average two-bedroom rent did not change in the Windsor CMA.
  • The rental affordability index shows that affordability in Windsor's rental market was improved slightly.

"Improving job prospects, rising immigration and fewer residents leaving to search for work elsewhere as well as the reduced movement of renters to homeownership have contributed to an increase in rental demand in the Windsor market this year," noted Margot Stevenson, CMHC Market Analyst for the Windsor CMA.
