Denver Public School Students Receive Solar Education Along With 1.8 MW of Solar Power

Innovative DECK Solar Monitoring Solution Brings PV Performance Into the Classroom

EUGENE, OR--(Marketwire - December 7, 2010) - Over the last ten months, a combined 1.8 MW of solar PV panels has been installed on the rooftops of 16 Denver Public Schools. The School District and the solar visionaries behind this program (Namasté Solar, Oak Leaf Energy Partners, and MP2 Capital) wanted more than the substantial production of renewable solar energy from this project however. They also wanted to bring the educational impact of the energy being generated on the rooftop right back into the classroom. To make this a reality, they developed an in-class curriculum with DECK Solar Monitoring as the key lab component.

"Solar monitoring allows students to really take advantage of the educational opportunity afforded by a solar PV installation on a school," explained Lauren Coyne, Co-owner and Education & Outreach Manager at Namasté Solar, Colorado's leading solar integrator. "It provides a wealth of ongoing data that can be used to enhance student understanding of how the technology works, what factors affect production, and what the benefits are of the system over time. DECK Monitoring's solution is particularly suitable for a school installation because it provides a user-friendly interface that is easily navigable by teachers and students alike.  They can access basic information about system components on the 'How Solar Works' screen. The information is presented in a way that is easily understandable by many ages of students. The versatile graphing function provides a wealth of data that allows students to compare various data sets over several different periods of time so that they can begin to see patterns and draw their own conclusions."

Over the last year, DECK Monitoring has become the Solar Monitoring solution of choice for schools of all sizes from Hawaii to Massachusetts. "Our mission at DECK Monitoring is to promote and enable renewable energy," notes Freeman Corbin, Co-owner and Director of Sales at DECK Monitoring. "We can think of no better way to fulfill that mission than to help educate the next generation of Americans on the real and immediate benefits of solar energy. We absolutely love monitoring school projects and are committed to serving the educational market in even more innovative ways over the next year."

DECK Monitoring's deep roots in solar have also made it the Solar Monitoring solution of choice for integrators looking for a hassle-free installation. Stephen Kane, Co-owner and Service Director at Namaste Solar, says that "from Sales to Procurement to Support, the DECK Monitoring staff has been fantastic to work with. Namasté Solar has held the DECK Support Staff to a high standard of installation turn around and issue resolution and they have not let us down. We deployed 16 different sites in less than 10 months and DECK kept up with us and our changing requirements all along the way. We have been very impressed. They have been stellar and always find a solution, no matter what the challenge. We really appreciate the talent and diligence of everyone at DECK."
