Denver Zoo Opens "Nature Connects®, Art With LEGO® Bricks," Brought to You by The Goddard Schools

Award-Winning Traveling Exhibit Makes Its Denver Debut

DENVER, CO--(Marketwired - August 07, 2015) - Denver Zoo is excited to announce the opening of its first traveling exhibit, “Nature Connects, Art with LEGO® Bricks,” brought to you by The Goddard Schools. This award-winning exhibit, which will run from August 7 to November 1, features life-size, and even some larger than life, animal and plant sculptures made from LEGO bricks scattered throughout the park. Ultimately, guests will see 38 of those sculptures at the exhibit, including 10 specially commissioned pieces never seen before. Guests can enjoy the exhibit daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through its run, weather pending, and it is free with regular admission.

Today marks the exhibit’s Denver debut. Denver Zoo is only the third zoo and tenth location to ever to host it, along with other botanic gardens and science centers around the country. The Zoo paid $200,000 to lease the exhibit and commission its new pieces. Those pieces, which include a never-before-seen lion, snow leopard and whooping crane, took the exhibit’s artist, Sean Kenney, and his staff seven months to build. Six more sculptures of bats and a giant spider will be unveiled in October in advance of the Halloween. Three of the new sculptures will join the exhibit when it leaves for its next destination in November.

The sculptures represent species that can be found in North America and abroad, such as a bison and its calf and a bumblebee. They are all incredibly detailed and assembled almost exclusively using the popular connecting toys. The amounts of brick pieces used range from 530 for a small frog to more than 130,000 for a brand new polar bear!

In addition to showing guests how they connect with animals and nature through art, Zoo staff members hope “Nature Connects, Art with LEGO® Bricks,” brought to you by The Goddard Schools, will build a fondness among children for science, technology, engineering and math.

Denver Zoo will also host a special evening Saturday Night “Block” Party on Saturday, August 8, from 6:30-9 p.m. In addition to allowing guests to enjoy the exhibit after hours, the event will feature a live DJ and LEGO® Bricks Show by Princess’ Group, family-friendly activities, including complimentary carousel rides and Lorikeet Adventure feedings, zookeeper talks and animal demonstrations around the Zoo. There will even be a Block City Beer Garden for adults. All of the Zoo’s buildings and two of its restaurants will be also be open for dinner and snacks. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children age 3-11, with Zoo members receiving a $5 discount.
