The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces welcome the latest Ombudsman's report

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 28, 2013) - The Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) today acknowledged positively the recommendations of Ombudsman Mr. Pierre Daigle on the need for faster processing of adjudications and grievances related to compensation and benefits.

The Canadian Armed Forces is committed to improving how it provides support to its members and their families, and that includes addressing how our grievance process functions," said General Tom Lawson, the Chief of the Defence Staff. "The Ombudsman's findings have further helped us to identify important compensation and benefits issues that need to be addressed along with those we are already working on. While we have improved a number of elements within the grievance system over the years, I know we have more to do. This is an evolving process that will continue to improve, thanks to the dedicated work of people like the Ombudsman and those within our Chief of Military Personnel organization."

"The majority of the findings contained in the report agree with those already known to the CAF and measures have recently been put in place to shorten the amount of time it takes to adjudicate claims and to minimize the build-up of caseload," said Major-General David Millar, Chief of Military Personnel. "Actions are already under way to address the issues raised and I look forward to seeing the positive results that this will bring about."

For example, to deal with the backlog, additional employees will be hired to assist with the adjudication and the grievances sections, which represents an increase of over 50 per cent of personnel dedicated to these important tasks. More importantly, the CAF are continuing the ongoing review of the Canadian Forces Integrated Relocation Policy and have been working closely with the Treasury Board Secretariat in that regard. The review places emphasis on benefits intended to minimise the potential financial hardship of CAF members and their families who are relocating. The Department continues to work towards completion of the relocation directive review by the 2014 posting season. A team of staff within Director General Compensation and Benefits has been solely dedicated to this task since late April.
