Department of National Defence: Pilot Soars to Top Job at Canada Command

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 19, 2006) - Lieutenant-General Marc Dumais accepted the responsibility of protecting Canada this morning, as he became the new Commander of Canada Command during a ceremony at the Cartier Square Armouries. Lieutenant-General Dumais replaces Vice-Admiral Jean-Yves Forcier, who is retiring after 35 years of dedicated service in the Canadian Forces.

"It is a great honour to be appointed as the Commander of Canada Command," said Lieutenant-General Dumais. "I am very excited to have this opportunity, particularly at this point in its evolution. Vice-Admiral Forcier brought the concept of an operational command to reality and the development of Canada Command must continue. Canadians deserve the same quality of planning and military response to protect them and their interests at home, as we deliver overseas."

Vice-Admiral Forcier was the first military commander to formally be responsible for the defence and security of Canada. "It was a great honour to be the first Commander to be able to focus our efforts on the security of this great nation," said Vice-Admiral Forcier.

As an integrated national operational command headquarters, Canada Command allows the Canadian Forces to bring the best available military resources from across Canada to bear on a crisis or threat, wherever it occurs, nation-wide. The creation of Canada Command means that a unified and integrated chain of command exist at the national and regional levels, and moreover, that the commander has the immediate authority to deploy maritime, land and air assets in support of domestic operations.

The creation of Canada Command was based on the new international security environment and a commitment to place greater emphasis on the defence of Canada and North America.
