Desert Sands Unified School District Breaks Ground on Its Newest High School

Community and School Leaders Gather to Celebrate Construction

INDIO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 26, 2007 -- On Thursday, March 22, 2007, shovelfuls of dirt were tossed into the air to signal the start of construction on the 46-acre campus of the fourth high school in the Desert Sands Unified School District. The new school will feature a central mall, two-story buildings, and classrooms equipped with revolutionary technology for distinctive educational programs. Classes are expected to begin in the fall of 2009.

Dr. Doris Wilson, Superintendent for Desert Sands Unified School District, spoke at the groundbreaking ceremonies, stating that "the school will be a magnet for students interested in pursuing language and communication arts, including reading, writing, speaking and just as important, listening. It is our intention to create a 'lighthouse' school that prepares our students to become leaders in the field of International Economics."

The District is experiencing rapid growth that has at last pushed its boundaries to the North side of Interstate 10, an expansion that means the district adds at least 100 new teachers each year. According to Dr. Wilson, "Teachers at the new high school will be experts in the subjects they will teach, and in addition to the excellent administrative, certificated and classified staff, will demonstrate to students a fine example of the qualities and talent that leaders of our society must have."

Wilson gives credit for the new school to the supervision of her Deputy Superintendent, Charlene Whitlinger, and to the exemplary work of the design team, led by Riverside-based Ruhnau Ruhnau Clarke architects. Said Wilson, "Ruhnau Ruhnau Clarke has, for over ten years, been an integral part of the educational facilities team at Desert Sands Unified School District. They are an architectural firm who clearly understands the mission of our District and works as our partner to achieve the goals we have set forth."

Roger Clarke, Principal Architect at Ruhnau Ruhnau Clarke, cites the cohesive team structure between the District personnel and design team, which includes Ledesma & Meyer Construction Co., for the school's precise development.

Also in development adjacent to the high school is a new middle school, designed by Ruhnau Ruhnau Clarke, which is expected to break ground in March 2008.
