Design Consultancy Recognized in Prestigious Industry Awards

Artefact Honored in Good Design Awards Program

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - January 12, 2011) - Artefact, a Seattle-based design consultancy, and Carbon Design Group, a full-service product development consultancy, today announced that their collaborative work was recognized with a 2010 Good Design Award. Out of thousands of entries from design firms and corporations, Artefact and Carbon's Project Impact was selected by a jury of designers and architects from several renowned organizations.

"The criteria for award selection follows the original, historic GOOD DESIGN program set forth in 1950, formulated by Saarinen and Eames, which is based on function and aesthetic, but with a contemporary emphasis for environmental concerns and Green Design," states Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine, Museum President/CEO of The Chicago Athenaeum. Project Impact was the sole award winner in the Energy Systems category. The winners can be found on the Chicago Athenaeum web site.

"I'm excited to see Project Impact recognized by the design industry," said Rob Girling, principal and co-founder of Artefact. "As a design firm that works with companies to develop next generation user experiences, we know that we have a responsibility not just to the client and users, but to improving the world around us through design. This award shows that the industry is listening."

In their partnership for Project Impact, Artefact and Carbon created a series of design concepts that help consumers improve their residential energy efficiency by exposing and managing consumption in encouraging and actionable ways. The system includes common household appliances that help raise awareness, inform decisions, provide motivation for change, and provide new capabilities without adding extra effort or inconvenience. Concepts leverage the capabilities of the "smart grid" -- a revolutionary upgrade to today's antiquated residential power grid that has received hundreds of billions of dollars in government and private investment.

The joint project between Artefact and Carbon has previously been recognized with a 2010 International Design Excellence (IDEA) Silver award. Artefact has been recognized for their outstanding work by design industry awards in the past, such as the "365: AIGA Annual Design Competition 30," I.D. Magazine's "Annual Design Review" and numerous other IDEA awards.
