Desjardins Financial Security Selects Data Domain

Leading Canadian Financial Services Firm Envisions a Tape-Free Data Protection Environment

SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 9, 2007) - Data Domain, the leading provider of Enterprise Protection Storage solutions, today announced that Canadian-based Desjardins Financial Security has implemented Data Domain appliances for disk-based data protection. In addition, the firm plans to deploy additional Data Domain products for a disaster recovery solution.

A financial services and insurance subsidiary of Desjardins Group, the largest integrated cooperative financial group in Canada, Desjardins Financial Security (DFS) is currently protecting approximately 35 terabytes of data on Data Domain appliances in its Levis data center near Quebec. The firm's reasons for moving from tape backup to the Data Domain solution were initially performance driven.

"Our data was growing at forty percent annually, and increasingly we were unable to complete our two daily incremental backup tape copies in time to meet the schedule for removal of the duplicates for offsite storage," said Jean-Rene Caron, project manager at Desjardins Financial Security. "We really needed to shorten our backup cycles and our first Data Domain appliance solved that situation -- it reduced our typical restore times from a few hours to just a few minutes. Our Data Domain installations were exceedingly simple, and it only took a few hours before we were conducting our first disk-based backups. We were also pleased to find that the time and effort our team was spending on management and administration of backups has been significantly reduced.

"Our initial use of the Data Domain appliance was to backup email and file servers, and now we've added one of the new DD560 appliances and will be migrating backup of our databases over to the Data Domain solutions as well," Caron added. "Next we are planning to install an additional Data Domain appliance remotely to vault our data over the network for disaster recovery."

With daily incremental and weekly full backups, DFS's backup policies are not unusual when compared to other enterprises. As a financial institution with funds and insurance clients, however, their business continuity requirements are quite rigorous, and fast restore times to ensure timely data availability are a key component of customer service delivery. "Our customers need access to their account information immediately and on a twenty-four hour basis," said Marcel Painchaud, senior architecture counselor at Desjardins Financial Security. "By having our local backup on disk with Data Domain, we can be confident that data is available and can be restored very quickly to maintain client service levels."

Frank Slootman, president and CEO of Data Domain, said "We still see tape in the rear view mirror but disk and network-based data protection is where the world is headed. Our valued customer DFS is another key proof point that even the most demanding IT users can reduce their dependency on tape operations quickly, economically and reliably."
