Detached Home Starts Moved Up in June

LONDON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) - Detached home starts continued to move up in the London Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) in June according to preliminary figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Construction of single-detached homes, the most popular housing type in the London CMA, increased compared to the same month in 2009. Cumulative detached home starts soared compared to the same period in 2009. However, because there were no apartment starts in June, total starts were down.

"Strong employment growth in the health care sector earlier this year has supported demand for single-detached homes," said David Lan, CMHC's London Market Analyst. "Builders have responded to the stronger demand with higher production since this allows them to better compete with the resale home market, and to reestablish inventories," added Lan.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
