Detroit Pistons and Pistons with a Purpose bring Christmas to Crossroads for Youth

OXFORD, MI--(Marketwired - December 06, 2016) - On December 10, members of the Detroit Pistons and Pistons with a Purpose -- a philanthropic community service organization made up of people connected to the NBA basketball team including players, wives, parents and siblings -- will bring Christmas to Crossroads for Youth.

Spearheaded by Kim Van Gundy, wife of Detroit Pistons' coach Stan Van Gundy, Pistons with a Purpose already brought some holiday cheer to Crossroads for Youth with a delivery of pre-lit Christmas trees for the residential buildings on the campus. On Saturday, December 10, players will bring the decorations -- including autographed Christmas ornaments. Local Oxford restaurant, Victoria's Delights will provide food for the event.

"It all started with the wish of one Crossroads for Youth resident. With the help of his caseworker, he was able to meet the Pistons. While there, he commented that he wished the other kids at Crossroads for Youth could have the same experience. The next thing we knew Kim Van Gundy and Pistons with a Purpose wanted to sponsor a Christmas event. It snowballed from there," explained Karen Gully, program director for Crossroads for Youth.

"All children deserve something special at Christmas and we are happy we can provide some holiday magic for Crossroads for Youth residents," said Van Gundy.

"We are so fortunate Pistons with a Purpose want to make the holiday season more festive for our kids," said Chris Veihl clinical director for Crossroads for Youth. "Many of our kids have never had anyone give them anything. Empathy and compassion can't be taught, but our kids learn it when someone shows it to them."

For 65 years, Crossroads for Youth, fondly remembered as Camp Oakland, has worked with abused, neglected and at-risk children. The organization partners with additional groups to present educational, vocational and recreational opportunities for residents, including Oxford Community Schools, SAY Detroit Play Center and Teacher's Pet.

Crossroads for Youth is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) treatment agency that serves at-risk children and youth ages 7-17. Crossroads for Youth believes that every child deserves a chance and as such, works to strengthen families and youth with skills and tools so they become valuable contributors in their communities.
