Deutsche Bank Dominates European Equity Research, Money Managers Tell Institutional Investor

Citi, After Boosting Its Research Operations, Is Year's Biggest Upward Mover

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - Feb 7, 2012) - Deutsche Bank leaped from sixth place last year to lead Institutional Investor's All-Europe Research Team for the first time, bringing the nine-year reign of UBS to an abrupt end. This year the German bank returns in the top spot with a whopping 44 team positions (seven more than last year) and nabs another title from its Swiss rival, that of winner of the most No. 1 teams in a single year since 2002, when the survey was divided into separate equity and fixed-income teams. Deutsche claims 17 first-place positions, nearly triple the six it won last year, and breaks the record of 13 set by UBS in 2009.

BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research adds two positions, for a total of 30; that's enough to bump the firm up one notch to tie with UBS for second, the same spot the Swiss bank held in 2011. Also returning in the same place -- in a tie for fourth -- are J.P. Morgan Cazenove and Morgan Stanley; each adds one position, bringing its total to 24.

Citi is the year's biggest mover, picking up six positions, for a total of 16, and leaping from tenth place to tie for sixth with Credit Suisse.

"We have totally refreshed our team, with over 60 analysts joining over the last 18 months," explains Terence Sinclair, Citi's head of equity research. "We have also focused on revamping our content. We added a new stock to Western Europe coverage every two days."

The 27th annual All-Europe Research Team results reflect the opinions of 2,200 money managers at some 760 institutions managing roughly $5.7 trillion in European equities, or nearly 84 percent of the MSCI Europe index's market cap of $6.8 trillion at the time of polling.
