Developing Ottawa's Leadership Capacity-5 years and growing!

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - June 2, 2005) - We have a reason to celebrate! On June 9, 2005, 22 participants of the most recent Leadership Ottawa program (coming from the private, public and non-profit sectors) will be graduating from the 9 month program. Four varied community projects have been completed, and an immeasurable number of multi-sector connections have been developed across various demographics and cultures helping make Ottawa a strong, healthy and interconnected city.

In 1999, the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation approached Volunteer Ottawa and the Community Foundation of Ottawa with a vision and seed funding to start a local, community-based leadership program. The first program was started in January 2001. After 5 years of operation, the program now boasts an impressive Advisory Board (incl. Bob Chiarelli, Russell Mills, John Kelly, Grete Hale) an Executive Director with global expertise and 115 Leadership Ottawa graduates, committed to creating better communities. Millions of Ottawa citizens have already been exposed to the 20 community projects which were part of the program. The program continues to expand its impact as alumni seek more ways to collaborate and contribute to community initiatives. Definitely a reason to celebrate on June 9!

In addition, former Ottawa Councillor Alex Munter will be honoured as the "Community Leader of the Year" at the reception hosted at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, from 6-8 pm. This award is meant to recognize the achievements of an organization or individual who has best demonstrated exceptional community leadership skills in an effort to make a positive impact within the community.

To mark the fifth anniversary, Honourary Alumni awards will be given out to five individuals in recognition of their inspired leadership.

To build on the success of Leadership Ottawa, the board has recently announced the appointment of Bart Bakker as its new Executive Director. Bart brings a wealth of international organizational leadership experience to the program.
