DFO: 2006-07 Total Allowable Catches for Groundfish Stocks Off Nova Scotia and the Bay of Fundy

DARTMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA--(CCNMatthews - March 29, 2006) - Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) announced today that most of the total allowable catches (TACs) will remain the same for this year's groundfish fishery, with the exception of specific stocks outlined below. This announcement builds on the Minister's March 23, 2006 announcement, in which the access and allocation components of many Atlantic management plans were stabilized.

"This additional allocation stabilization reflects my commitment to move forward with a coherent and modernized fisheries management system," stated Minister Hearn. "Achieving stability is the crucial starting point for improving relationships with industry, stakeholders and other resource users."

TACs for most stocks off the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia have been relatively constant in the last number of years, with the exception of pollock and haddock. The pollock TAC will be reduced by 25% from the 2005-06 level to 4,500 tonnes. In a previous announcement the haddock stock off Georges Bank is at least showing signs of improved abundance. Favourable environmental conditions and cooperation from fishers on conservation measures in this area have helped improve landings in recent years.

The Maritimes Region groundfish fishery participants include close to 700 active fishers along Nova Scotia's southern shores and in the Bay of Fundy. The groundfish fishery targets cod, haddock, pollock, redfish and flounder, as well as a number of other bycatch species. Fishers operate throughout the year with various fleets, adjusting the timing of the fishery based on local abundance, weather, market conditions, and the participation of licence holders in other fisheries such as lobster.

Annual fishing plans are developed in consultation with the fishing industry and are reviewed annually to update quotas and introduce new measures considered appropriate by DFO and the fishing industry as part of the long-term groundfish management plan for 2002-07. Consultations also occur on an ongoing basis to ensure successful implementation of the plan.
