DFO: Convictions Under the Fisheries Act

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - April 28, 2009) - Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec Region, has just released a list of Gaspe and Lower St. Lawrence fish harvesters who were convicted and fined in March 2009 for various violations of the Fisheries Act (a list of offenders is available on the Marketwire Website at the following address: http://media3.marketwire.com/docs/pocatab0428.pdf).

The total amount of the fines imposed on the fishers is $88,000. Of this amount, $87,000 came from the Vague de fond investigation launched in February 2006 by officers of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec Region. This investigation uncovered a network of some fifteen people who reported false information on turbot landed on the Sainte-Therese-de-Gaspe dock in 2006.

The Department has a mandate to protect and conserve fishery resources and is ever vigilant in its efforts to prevent poaching of marine resources.
