DFO: Minister Finley Announces Funding for Much Needed Repairs at Port Dover Harbour Facility

PORT DOVER, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 8, 2006) - Canada's New Government announced today that it will invest in the rehabilitation of the inner east entrance pier at the commercial fishing harbour facility in Port Dover, Ontario. The Honourable Diane Finley, Member of Parliament for Haldimand--Norfolk and Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Canada, made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

"It gives me great pleasure to be part of a Government that is committed to keeping harbours like this one in Port Dover, in the necessary shape to play a strong part in the local economy," said Minister Finley. "This project will ensure continued safe access by commercial fishers and other users between the Lynn River and Lake Erie."

The Port Dover commercial fishing harbour facility, which is located at the mouth of the Lynn River, consists of two river entrance structures, a commercial harbour basin, and marginal wharves. Repair work will include the encapsulation of the existing inner east entrance pier with steel sheet piling, and the installation of a new concrete deck. This restoration work is necessary to ensure safety at the harbour and to secure the continued use by commercial fishers and other users.

Plans and specifications for the project have recently been finalized by Public Works and Government Services Canada and a call for tenders will be issued shortly. It is anticipated that on-site work will begin in January 2007.

This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Small Craft Harbours Program, in collaboration with the Port Dover Harbour Authority Corporation that manages and operates the facility for the benefit of local users. It is this close co-operation that enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishing.
