DFO: Minister Lawrence Cannon Announces Federal Investment of $195,000 for Harbour Projects in Quebec

SEPT-ILES, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 15, 2006) - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister responsible for Quebec, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, a federal investment of $195,000 for planning projects at two fishing harbours in Quebec.

"Fishing is essential to the economy of Quebec maritime communities," said Minister Cannon. "The Government of Canada is committed to supporting those communities and the fishers by providing them with safer harbour facilities."

Minister Cannon had hoped to be present at a ceremony today in Sept-Iles to make the announcement in person but the airplane in which he was travelling was unable to land due to poor weather.

The projects announced today will be carried out at the following Quebec harbours:

At La Tabatiere harbour, plans and specifications will be completed for the future rebuilding of the fishers' wharf to increase its stability and restore safe mooring conditions for the local fleet at berthing dock no. 2. Transport Canada is providing 60 per cent of the funding for this project.

At the Sept-Iles (Bunge) harbour, plans and specifications will be prepared for the installation of cathodic protection on the sheet pile wharf to halt corrosion and thereby increase the useful life of the wharf.

This $195,000 investment, combined with projects previously announced this year by Canada's new government, brings the investment for the Small Craft Harbours program in Quebec to $6.6 million.

The work will be undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada under the Small Craft Harbours Program, in collaboration with the harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for the benefit of local users. This collaboration with the clients enables the government to continue to provide commercial fishers with an operable system of harbours and harbour facilities throughout Canada.
