Diabetes is a serious disease that can be life threatening if not controlled. It is often associated with long-term complications that can affect every system and part of the body. Diabetes is a disorder in which an individual has high blood sugar because either the body doesn't make enough insulin or the cells do not respond to insulin that is produced. In the United States, 25.8 million children and adults -- 8.8 percent of the population -- have diabetes, according to 2011 data from the American Diabetes Association.
