DialAFlight Reveal Top Ten Family Attractions in Sydney

Australia's largest city has always been a firm travel favourite, but there's more to do in the city than many families think

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 11, 2011) - Sydney by all accounts is a happening place. It's Australia's oldest and largest settlement, and has for decades fronted the country's tourism boom. Recent industry recognition has declared Sydney the 'world's best summer city' after consistently attracting millions of tourists every year. Following the award, DialAFlight, one of the UK's leading travel operators, has unveiled their top ten family attractions in the city, persuading customers to book flights to Sydney ahead of the Australian summertime.

Interestingly, two of the city's most iconic landmarks (Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera house) aren't included in the top ten- although these, of course, are major family attractions. The list aims to highlight the diverse range of activities available in the city, therefore proving that there really is something for everyone in Sydney.

  1. Luna Park: Open since 1935, Luna Park is a permanent amusement park located at Milsons point on the Sydney Harbour. From the Wild Mouse roller coaster to the Flying Saucer, Luna Park has adrenal thrills for the whole family. Entry is free, but the games and rides require tickets.
  1. Royal Botanic Gardens: Set beside the waterfront, the Royal Botanic Gardens offers picturesque views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge shadowing the iconic Opera House. Admission is free, so it's an ideal place to relax, take in the views and have a family picnic.
  1. Sydney Aquarium: More than 12,000 marine animals are on display here, many found at the Great Barrier Reef. Children will simply love exploring the underwater tunnels- some of which are surrounded by top ocean predators, such as sharks and stingrays.
  1. Harbour Jet tours: Jet-boat tours of the harbour are ideal for those with a taste of adventure. With the longest tours providing more than an hour of high-speed thrills, it's an activity Dads will simply love- and best of all, family packages are available.
  1. Taronga Zoo: Parents will enjoy Taronga Zoo just as much as their children. The Sky Safari cable car offers great views of the city and the zoo itself. Most visitors cross the harbour to reach the zoo; combination ferry-and-zoo tickets are the most popular for families.
  1. Sydney Sky Tower: Equal in height to the Eiffel Tower, the Sky Tower offers a panoramic view of the city of Sydney and the Pacific. Tickets also include OzTrek, a 3D adventure experience providing a virtual "walkabout" across the wilds of Australia.
  1. Australian Museum: History and nature packed into one: this museum dates back to 1827 and offers free guided tours of the exhibits, which focus heavily on the peoples and species native to the "island continent." One entire wing is sure to be a hit with children- it focuses on the dinosaurs that once roamed the vast wilderness of the interior.
  1. Manly Beach: Although Bondi maybe Sydney's most famous beach, families tend to prefer the peacefulness found in the district of Manly. Children can enjoy activities, such as sea Kayaking and snorkelling without surfer traffic and parents can relax and sunbathe- perfect!
  1. Australian Reptile Park: Open 364 days a year (closed on Christmas Day), the Australian Reptile Park is less than one hour North of Sydney. Award-winning, the park showcases some of Australia's most exotic reptiles, but be warned: there are plenty of creepy crawleys too.
  1. The James Craig: After prolonged renovation work, this 19th century ship sails Sydney's harbour every weekend. Up to 200 passengers can climb abroad her deck and there are guided tours available on-board for those eager to learn more about the ships history.
