Digital Chocolate Boosts Its Games With Xsigo Virtual I/O

Game Developer Deploys Virtual I/O to Boost Application Performance by 35%, Reduce Cabling Complexity by 80%, and Accelerate Management

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - October 26, 2010) -  Xsigo Systems, Inc., a technology leader in data center I/O virtualization, today announced that Digital Chocolate, a leader in new digital media and social games, has deployed Xsigo's award-winning I/O virtualization technology to support its rapidly accelerating demand for both the development and delivery of its award-winning games. By using Xsigo, Digital Chocolate increased application performance by 35%, reduced cabling complexity by 80%, and achieved a wire-once infrastructure that allows them to transition applications from a test environment to a production environment in minutes rather than hours or days.

"We demand a lot of our IT infrastructure, with over 100 different games offered across virtually every platform, and with over 12 million monthly active users on Facebook alone," said Jason Loia, COO of Digital Chocolate. "With Xsigo virtual I/O we have eliminated I/O bottlenecks to help increase application performance, and have gained a virtualized I/O infrastructure that lets us rapidly transition products through our test and production environments. This combination boosts developer productivity, accelerates time-to-market and enhances the overall user experience of our products."

Founded and led by Trip Hawkins, Digital Chocolate has rapidly emerged as a leader in new digital media and social games. Best known for Millionaire City, MMA Pro Fighter, Rollercoaster Rush and Tower Bloxx, Digital Chocolate led all software companies in Apple App Store downloads in 2009 and has been the fastest-growing maker of Facebook social games with virtual goods in 2010.

For Digital Chocolate, a key benefit of virtual I/O is data center agility. Because Xsigo virtual I/O can be re-configured on the fly, a server can be moved in minutes from the company's application staging environment to a production environment in minutes without physical re-configuration. A second benefit is Xsigo's high-bandwidth server connectivity that accelerates applications and management tasks.

"With Xsigo, virtual machine migrations now take from two to ten seconds, versus as much as 30 minutes with 1G Ethernet," Loia continued. "And our MySQL servers can now support 35% more requests per second than before. Furthermore, because my server I/O is now virtual, I can make changes in seconds without having to touch the servers. All of this lets me more rapidly provide IT services that deliver a better user experience at less cost."

The Xsigo VP780 and VP560 I/O Directors consolidate data center infrastructure and provide dynamic connectivity from any server to any Ethernet or Fibre Channel network, a key requirement of cloud computing. At VMworld 2010, Xsigo announced two significant advancements in virtual I/O technology:

  • An Ethernet-based Xsigo I/O Director -- the industry's first virtual I/O technology to leverage the standard Ethernet ports found on every x86 server
  • An enhanced-performance I/O Director that delivers the industry's highest server throughput with 4X the I/O capacity of 10G Ethernet

With Xsigo, data center managers can reduce cabling requirements by 70 percent, cut power consumption by 30 percent, and complete routine management tasks in seconds rather than hours or days.

"We are thrilled that Xsigo was able to help Digital Chocolate support their explosive growth," said Jon Toor, vice-president of marketing at Xsigo. "In demanding environments such as theirs, efficiency and performance become mission critical-deliverables from the IT department, making virtual I/O an ideal fit for their needs."
