Digital Chocolate Chooses Tintri VMstore(TM) to Make Private Cloud Cheaper and Easier Than Public Cloud

Popular Publisher of Millionaire City, MMA Pro Fighter and More Sees Performance Boost for Users and 60 Day ROI on World's First VM-Aware Storage

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - Aug 4, 2011) - Tintri, Inc., the leading producer of VM-aware storage appliances, today announced that Digital Chocolate, a leader in cross-platform social games, has deployed Tintri's VMstore storage appliances in production on the game publisher's private cloud. More than half of Digital Chocolate's games now run on Tintri VMstore.

"With Tintri, it was easier and less expensive to move some of our most popular games now to our private cloud. We saw ROI within 60 days," said Alfred Tsai, director of Global IT and Network Operations at Digital Chocolate. "When our games ran on a public cloud platform, we needed to turn off VMs to save money, which affected the user experience. With the games that run on our internal cloud, we're able to keep VMs available and meet user demand. It's no big deal to add VMs."

Digital Chocolate, with millions of active daily users of its popular games, has rapidly emerged as a leader in new digital media and social games. Best known for Millionaire City, Zombie Lane, Rollercoaster Rush and Tower Bloxx, Digital Chocolate led all software companies in App Store downloads in 2009, and in 2010 was the fastest-growing maker of Facebook social games with virtual goods. Focused on original brands and technology for a wide variety of platforms, the company has made over 100 different award-winning games and works with 200 leading web and mobile channel partners in 80 countries.

"Game publishers like Digital Chocolate compete in a very fast-moving industry and need to provide the best possible user experience across many different platforms, from Facebook to iPhone and more," said Kieran Harty, CEO of Tintri. "It's a significant challenge to scale, and the cost to serve each player can make or break their business. We're pleased to give Digital Chocolate the flexibility to move their games from a public to a private cloud while dramatically lowering costs and improving customer experience."

According to Tsai, as a game user base scales quickly, the economics of a public cloud become less attractive. However, in early pilots of a private cloud option that relied on traditional storage, Digital Chocolate found that it was pushing the SAN storage devices beyond their capability. They were running out of I/O and the cost to mitigate these challenges was prohibitive.

With Tintri, deployment was simple and the appliances delivered better performance and reduced I/O requirements. The return on the Tintri investment was less than 60 days, and cut the cost per user for some of Digital Chocolate's most popular games by more than 50 percent compared to a public cloud solution or traditional SAN storage.
