Digital Switching Systems Unveils New Compact and Powerful Keypad

The PowerKey 1000 CAN Keypad Is the Ideal Solution for Any Application Requiring a High Number of Functions and Capabilities in a Compact Dash Area

RALEIGH, NC--(Marketwire - Oct 11, 2012) -  Digital Switching Systems (DSS), a leading provider of rugged open-source keypads, has announced another milestone in its PowerKey family of keypads, the PowerKey 1000 CAN keypad. The PowerKey1000 CAN keypad combines the styling and compact package size of the PowerKey family with the software features and network capabilities of DSS' popular PowerKey Pro family of keypads. The PowerKey1000 CAN keypad is the perfect lightweight and flexible solution for any application and continues Digital Switching Systems' leadership in rugged and flexible keypads.

Supporting CAN-based protocols, the new PowerKey 1000 CAN keypad incorporates such features as add-on keys, DeviceNet LED status indicator, re-configurations functions such as address, PGN's and other CAN features. It is also available in a CAN-Open, Device Type 401 configuration. DSS standard features such as IP67, ruggedized construction, semi-custom, laser etched graphics to customer specifications, one million cycles, etc. are also all part of this new generation of omni-BUS™ HMI devices.

CLIENT CASE STUDY

A heavy equipment manufacturer had two issues that needed to be resolved for their next generation of motor control systems. First, they needed a large number of human to machine inputs in a very limited space. Secondly, they needed a network device to reduce the wire harness to a minimal size. By using three PowerKey 1000 CAN keypads, Digital Switching Systems was able to provide a rugged, ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing solution mounted into the arm rests of an operator's chair.

The PowerKey1000 CAN keypad, operating on CAN/J1939, with custom legends for the various command functions were networked into the arm rests of the user control chair using power and two communications wires. The compact design allowed up to 30 functions to be controlled in a space of approximately 36 square inches using three keypads with custom designed graphics depicting the complex functions of the machinery.
