Looking over the newly-painted street in front of his house Friday morning, Vaughan's Naji Naeemzada knew this would be a day he'd never forget. The winner of the Direct Energy Driveway Challenge, Naeemzada spent the morning hosting Toronto Raptors' All-Star Chris Bosh and approximately 100 friends and family for an old-fashioned pick-up game of basketball.
"I've been a Raptors fan for years. I never dreamed that I'd have one of the Raptors shooting hoops in front of my house - let alone Chris Bosh. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance and it's unbelievable," said Naeemzada, who beat out six semi-finalists in an on-court contest during a Raptors game in April at Air Canada Centre to win the ultimate prize of challenging Bosh one-on-one.
The Score's Cabrel "Cabbie" Richards kept the party going for Naeemzada and the family, friends and neighbours who came out to cheer him on against NBA All-Star and fan-favourite, Chris Bosh. Direct Energy and the Raptors set up a special basketball court on the street in front of Naeemzada's home, where the athletics show-down took place.
"I heard last year's Direct Energy Driveway Challenge was a lot of fun and that's why I was looking forward to participating in today's event," said Bosh. "It was a great opportunity to meet Naji and some of our great Raptors fans."
Following the on-court activities, guests were treated to a BBQ and autograph session. This is the second year for the Direct Energy Driveway Challenge, and the first with Bosh.
"Direct Energy and the Raptors have been working together since 2004, and this has been a great example of teamwork between our two organizations to bring such a once-in-a-lifetime experience as the Driveway Challenge to Naji and his Vaughan neighbourhood," said Mike Beck, VP, Sales and Marketing for Direct Energy. "It's always a pleasure to work with the Raptors, who share with us a focus on being active in the GTA. Chris Bosh was 100 per cent committed to making this an unforgettable experience for Naji and his friends and family - proving once again why he's such a fan-favourite."
