Direct Energy: Hundreds of Bears Help Brighten the Holidays for Sick Kids

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 17, 2010) - Three hundred and fifty teddy bears will be making their way to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto today. The bears are being donated to the hospital in time for the holiday season by Direct Energy Residential services and its employees.

The teddy bear donation at SickKids is just one of several fundraisers being launched by the energy provider in Canada. Four hundred bears will also be headed to hospitals in Alberta including Edmonton's Stollery Kids Hospital.

"These bears will make hundreds of children smile as soon as they see them," said Susie Petro, Child Life specialist at SickKids. "All of these children will be spending the holidays in the hospital, which can be a little scary. The Child Life program helps provide emotional support to patients and families while they're in the hospital."

"We heard about the Child Life toy drive and wanted to contribute. Many of our own employees and customers have children at home and that have benefited from the wonderful treatment they've received at hospitals like SickKids," said Tanis Kozak, General Manager at Direct Energy. "This is a chance for us to give back to the hospital on their behalf, especially during a time of year where no child should be without a gift from Santa."

The Child Life program at SickKids provides a therapeutic play program which are designed to reduce stress and help patients cope with hospitalization. It provides family support, education and provides diversion entertainment.
