Direct Energy Makes Open Passage Expedition Carbon-Neutral

Voyage set to increase awareness of climate change, study impact on Arctic communities

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 5, 2009) - Direct Energy is on board for a 7,000-nautical-mile expedition of Canada's Northwest Passage this summer, as part of the Open Passage Expedition. The Expedition, led by Manitoba-born Cameron Dueck, was created to help raise global awareness for climate change, and to study the impacts of climate change on Canada's northern Inuit communities.

As part of its focus on addressing climate change, Direct Energy has signed on as a sponsor of the Open Passage Expedition, and has also committed to making the Expedition carbon-neutral - retiring the carbon credits needed to offset the emissions from the voyage itself, as well as the air travel for the four-member crew to their launching point in Victoria, BC, and back from their scheduled completion port in Halifax, NS.

"While Direct Energy operates in North America, we're part of the larger global community, and we feel it's our responsibility to support efforts that seek to increase knowledge about climate change and its impacts on our planet," said Nathan Kroeker, Vice President, Direct Energy. "In keeping with the Open Passage Expedition's goals, it seemed a natural fit for Direct Energy to take our support of the Expedition one step further by making it carbon-neutral."

Kroeker will be joining Dueck and his crew for the official voyage launch at 1:30 p.m. Pacific on Saturday, June 6th, at Victoria Harbour. From there, Dueck will captain Silent Sound through one of the most dangerous channels of water, making stops along the way to learn how the changing climate is affecting the lifestyle of the Inuit inhabitants of Canada's northernmost communities, before returning to port in Halifax, NS, in early fall.

In addition to plans for a documentary and book, the Expedition will be chronicled as-it-happens by Dueck himself, with a special edition of his Captain's Log available at www.directenergy.com/expedition, where people can also learn about Direct Energy's current environmental initiatives, calculate their own carbon footprint using an interactive online tool, and purchase energy-efficient products through the company's online store.
