Director of "10 Sketches of Life" Wins NCCU English Short Film Competition Again

TAIPEI, TAIWAN--(Marketwired - May 1, 2013) - The Office of International Cooperation (OIC) at National Chengchi University (NCCU) in Taiwan announced the 1st place winner of the "10 Must-Dos at NCCU" English short film competition: Titled "10 Sketches of Life," the short film was directed by Mr. Hao-tse Tang, NCCU student from Department of Sociology, who actually also won the similar competition for Chinese version. Besides that, he also received other awards offered for the new media contests by the government, including TYG Foundation's "Let's be creative" traffic safety video contest, National electricity promotion video competition, and 2th annual "Golden film - Love Taipei" film competition.

Held for the second time, the English short film competition aimed at promoting the best of what NCCU has to offer, particularly featuring its internationalized and culturally diverse learning environment. The winner of the competition is rewarded with $20,000 NTD and a certificate.

The winning film "10 Sketches of Life" delineates a mini story happening at NCCU campus, including the natural resource of Chingmei River and Maokong, a tea village near NCCU also the largest tea growing area in Taipei, all from the point of view of an international student. Through the main actor's pencil and sketchbook, the audience goes through experiences familiar to all NCCU students, for example, the 24-hour study room at the library, Zhinan Temple and various local food items from the nearby restaurants.

Mr. Tang has now won the English short film competition at NCCU twice in a row. His triumph as director had already been successfully recognized with his work, "Life at NCCU" not long ago. Mr. Tang said that this time he tried to record the episodes that frequently encountered by both local and international students with the popular filming technique known as "mini film." He said although he had won the contest not long ago, he wasn't fully confident back at that time. Yet for this year's contest he was very sure of what he needed.

According to Mr. Tang, college is a journey of rediscovering oneself. He likes to try out new things. In fact, his uncle is an art teacher and thus an artistic environment and expression has always been provided and encouraged. He even mentioned that sometimes his drawings were lying all over the floor in his room that people could barely walk freely in his room. Since college, he started to try various media to tell different stories, from posters, cards, character illustrations to digital books, and film making, all of which have been amazingly rewarding learning experiences.

The film that won second place, "Veronika´s Adventure," was directed by Ms. Veronika Tomanova, from Masaryk University in the Czech Republic. The film started with the line, "One's destination is never a place but a new way of seeing things," quoted from a writer and painter, Henry Miller. The film was narrated by Veronika herself, and tells stories and depicts various experiences happening on NCCU campus.

The 2nd runner up was "10 Days," a personal story of Arnaud, an exchange student from France studying at University of Leeds, who decided to do 10 special things just before his departure from NCCU, including playing rugby, finishing Chinese lessons and giving free all-pass lucky candy to students during the examinations period.
