Disabled Veteran-Owned Business Recipient of First RESNET Scholarship

OCEANSIDE, CALIFORNIA--(Marketwired - July 16, 2014) - Atigun Energy & Inspection Services, Inc., a disabled veteran-owned business, has been awarded the first RESNET Rating Industry Scholarship. The Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), with support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has developed a scholarship program to encourage U.S. Small Business Administration designated Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Businesses, Women-Owned Small Businesses and Minority Business Enterprises to become Home Energy Rating Companies and RESNET Accredited Providers.

Atigun Energy & Inspection Services, Inc., which takes its name from Alaska's Atigun Pass, is owned by James Thomas, a third generation Alaskan who began his inspection career on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, the nation's largest oil pipeline in Alaska. He is a member of several professional organizations including the U.S. Green Building Council, Association of Energy Engineers, and the Air Barrier Association of America, where he sits on several technical committees. After serving seven years in the army (including multiple deployments), in 2009 Thomas redirected his focus towards the energy efficiency industry.

The RESNET Rating Industry Scholarship will help him obtain his RESNET HERS certification, which will provide him with the tools needed to meet evolving client requirements and facilitate his company's growth. "I'm very grateful to RESNET for this opportunity," said Thomas. "I look forward to being a part of and contributing to this professional network. My goal is to pay it forward by hiring and training three additional energy professionals over the coming year."

According to RESNET Executive Director Steve Baden, "the purpose of this scholarship is to encourage the wider diversity of the rating industry. RESNET's goal is to have an industry as diverse as the American people. We are grateful for the support from the Environmental Protection Agency in helping to achieve this goal."
