Distinctive Welcome Sign, Landscaping Completed as Part of LAX Enhancement Project

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - June 12, 2008) - A new welcome sign and landscaping now greet travelers entering Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) via the northside entrance on Lincoln and Sepulveda Boulevards. Designed to be more inviting and aesthetically pleasing to the nearly 62 million passengers who use the airport annually, the sign welcomes drivers to LAX and on its reverse side it welcomes them into the Westchester area.

The block lettering in the sign is illuminated at night, a feature that continues the theme of the Gateway pylons on Century Boulevard. The sign's overall undulating shape and design evokes the nearby dunes and waves of the Pacific Ocean.

"As good neighbors we are proud the sign will not only serve to beautify a major LAX entryway, but that it will also serve as a nice introduction to our neighbors in the Westchester community," said Gina Marie Lindsey, Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director.

The installation of the sign and the landscaping are part of a joint effort between Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and the surrounding community. Designed by Gin Wong Associates and S.K.A., the project cost $45,000 and took 11 months to complete. LAWA construction and maintenance crews completed the landscaping.

"We are delighted with the new sign, and we have already received a number of compliments," said John Ruhlen, president of the Westchester Streetscape Improvement Association. "It ties in beautifully with the street improvements that are currently being made on the Westchester side."

A similar beautification project is ongoing on the southside of the airport at Sepulveda Boulevard and Imperial Highway. This project is being done in conjunction with Caltrans and is expected to be finished later this summer.

Los Angeles World Airports is a City of Los Angeles department that owns and operates four airports in Southern California: Los Angeles International, LA/Ontario International, LA/Palmdale Regional and Van Nuys Airport (general aviation).
