Divine Chocolate Partners With Rock the Vote to Serve Up 'Democracy & Fair Trade' Initiative This Fall

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - October 5, 2010) -  Starting today through November, Divine Chocolate, the Fair Trade chocolate brand co-owned by cocoa farmers in Ghana, will earmark a percentage of sales from each bar sold to support Fair Trade awareness activities at Rock the Vote (RTV) events. Divine and RTV will also activate and promote the initiative online via their respective websites and facebook pages. The campaign is aimed at encouraging young people in America to exercise their right to vote by providing them with a parallel perspective on the critical roles that democracy, Fair Trade and voting play in the lives of cocoa farmers in Ghana.

"Kuapa Kokoo Farmers' Cooperative, the co-owners of Divine Chocolate, set out to create better lives for West African cocoa farmers," said Erin Gorman, CEO of Divine Chocolate US. "They use three powerful tools; they are organized, democratic, and involve men and women equally. This has given them the power they need to improve their livelihoods and change the chocolate industry. We are thrilled to partner with Rock the Vote to encourage even more young voters this year to use democracy to make their voices heard and create their own brighter futures."

"Coinciding with our get out the vote effort this fall, we will involve young people in conversations around Fair Trade issues as they participate in our democracy by pledging and turning out to vote on November 2nd," commented Rock the Vote President, Heather Smith. "We are thrilled to have Divine supporting these efforts through the sale of their product."

Throughout the fall, Divine Chocolate will visit various events across the country, including Rock the Vote events, and ask young people for their thoughts on democracy and Fair Trade. Via an online contest, Divine will also ask the public to submit their best ideas for spreading the word about Fair Trade.

Updates from the campaign will be posted to and

About Divine Chocolate (
Divine Chocolate is a pioneering Fair Trade chocolate company, owned in part by the farmers of Kuapa Kokoo in Ghana. Choosing Divine gives you a guaranteed pleasure, and the farmers a guaranteed fair deal, as well as the chance to invest in a better future.

About Kuapa Kooko
In 1997, the farmers of Kuapa Kokoo voted to start their own Fair Trade chocolate company so farmers could have a better chance to invest in a better future. The farmers of Kuapa Kokoo, a farmers' cooperative of 45,000 members, supply the cocoa for each bar of Divine. They get paid a Fair Trade price for their beans and receive a social premium that the cooperative invests in schools, clean drinking water, medical clinics, and women's entrepreneurship projects.

About Rock the Vote (
Rock the Vote engages young people in our democracy and builds their political power by registering, educating and turning them out to vote, by forcing the candidates to campaign to them, and by making politicians pay attention to youth and the issues they care about once in office. We use music, popular culture, new technologies and old fashioned grassroots organizing to engage and mobilize young people to participate in every election, and provide the information and tools they need to do so. And we amplify the actions of those young people who step up to claim their voice in the process in order to create political and social change.
