The Divorce Center's Annual Meeting to Feature Speaker and Discussion on the Massachusetts Alimony Reform Bill

Professional Organization Comprising Multiple Disciplines Supporting Divorcing Couples Will Hold June 15th Get-Together and Professional Development Event

NEWTON, MA--(Marketwire - May 27, 2011) - The Divorce Center, a non-profit organization of professionals from multiple disciplines providing support and education for people going through separation or divorce, will focus its annual membership meeting and professional development event on the status of the Massachusetts Alimony Reform Bill. Taking place June 15, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Boston-Newton Crowne Plaza, 320 Washington Street, Newton, MA, the evening will begin with a networking get-together and annual membership meeting from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. At the professional development event from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., the guest speaker, Fern L. Frolin, Esq., will update attendees on the proposed alimony reform bill.

Ms. Frolin, who served on the Joint Judiciary Committee advisory committee that drafted the alimony reform bill, will provide a brief overview of the circumstances that led to the filing of the bill and a summary of the changes expected under the proposed alimony system. The specific changes to be discussed include:

  • Replacement of "need and ability to pay" alimony with different alimony forms, specifically tailored to the facts of the case.
  • Presumptive durational limits for alimony.
  • End of alimony at retirement age.
  • Presumptive amount limits.
  • Factors to be considered in determining amount and duration of an alimony order.
  • Effect of remarriage and co-habitation.

A buffet of gourmet hors d'oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available. A raffle will also be held with prizes such as Red Sox tickets, a golf bag, and a free one-year membership.
