DND: Canada to Host NATO Conference

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 4, 2007) - Canada is honoured to be hosting the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) 26 chiefs of defence, the Chairman of the Military Committee, and the Alliance's two strategic commanders at a NATO-led conference to be held in Ottawa, Ontario and Victoria, British Columbia Sept. 6 to 9, 2007. The conference is one of three annual meetings of NATO's top generals and flag officers. They meet three times a year, twice in Brussels and once in a host nation.

The more than 100 delegates will examine Alliance operations and capabilities from a long-term, strategic perspective. These sessions are important consensus-building meetings that formulate advice to the NATO's civilian decision-making body, the North Atlantic Council (NAC). Canada's Chief of the Defence Staff, General Rick Hillier, will be the conference's official host on behalf of the Canadian Forces and Department of National Defence.

General Ray Henault, NATO's Chairman of the Military Committee, will chair the conference. The Military Committee is NATO's highest military authority. Its consensus-based advice to the NAC is a prerequisite for approving NATO military actions and activities.

As the host nation, Canada will provide transport, conference facilities, security, and administrative support including a cultural program. The host cities will be reimbursed for all costs, including any extra security measures that may be required. Canada, an original member of the Alliance, last hosted the meeting in 1997.
