DND: Maritime Command Change of Command

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 22, 2009) - Vice-Admiral Dean McFadden assumed command of the Canadian Navy this morning at a formal ceremony held in Ottawa at the Cartier Square Drill Hall. The ceremony was presided over by General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff. Vice-Admiral McFadden assumed the duties of Commander Maritime Command from Vice-Admiral Drew Robertson.

"As Vice-Admiral McFadden takes the watch from Vice-Admiral Robertson, I have every confidence that the helm of the Navy is in good hands," said General Natynczyk. "During his tenure, Vice-Admiral Robertson has upheld the high standard of professionalism that the world has come to know of our Navy, and I expect that we will see nothing less from his replacement, Vice-Admiral McFadden, as he leads the Navy into the future."

"It has been a tremendous honour commanding the Navy, steering our great institution through what has been more than three years of steady service for Canada.," said Vice-Admiral Robertson. "I have the pleasure to be turning over the watch to an officer who is, without a doubt, ready to excel in this challenging appointment."

"I consider it a privilege to be taking command of the Navy from Vice-Admiral Robertson," stated Vice-Admiral McFadden. "The Navy has matured a great deal under his command, further establishing it as a key element in the overall success of the Canadian Forces. It's with a great deal of enthusiasm and anticipation that I accept, today, the challenges of continuing to build the Navy of tomorrow."

Following 36 years of distinguished and dedicated service, Vice-Admiral Robertson will retire from the CF. He served in a variety of key positions throughout his career, including as captain of the destroyers HMC Ships Annapolis and Athabaskan, and commander of the Canadian Task Group during its six-month Operation APOLLO deployment in 2001.

Vice-Admiral McFadden has over 30 years of leadership experience in the Navy, including Commander of Fifth Maritime Operations Group, Commander Atlantic Fleet, Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic, and most recently Commander Canada Command.
