DND: Members From 1 RCR Battle Group Mourn Fallen

PETAWAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 27, 2007) - A memorial service to honour the 19 fallen soldiers from Task Force 3-06 who died while serving in Afghanistan between August 2006 and February 2007 was held at 10:00 a.m. today at CFB Petawawa.

The ceremony provided the first opportunity for members of the Battle Group and their families to gather together and honour our fallen soldiers, grieve and begin the healing process.

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of these devoted soldiers," said The Honourable Gordon O'Connor, Minister of National Defence. "We are engaged in a difficult and dangerous mission in Afghanistan and Canadians should be proud of how our men and women in uniform are helping to bring peace, stability and development to this troubled part of the world."

"Our soldiers and their families make tremendous sacrifices to help those less fortunate than themselves and to serve Canada," said Lieutenant-Colonel Omer Lavoie, Commander 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (1 RCR) Battle Group. "Today we paused to remember our fallen comerades who died trying to bring peace to Afghanistan and we appreciate the Minister's presence at this important event."

The 1 RCR Battle Group was principally composed of soldiers from 1 RCR, 3rd Battalion The Royal Canadian Regiment, 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, 2 Combat Engineer Regiment, The Royal Canadian Dragoons, 2 Field Ambulance and 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Headquarters and Signals Squadron.
