DND: Minister O'Connor Meets With Croatian Defence Minister

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 10, 2006) - The Honourable Gordon O'Connor, Minister of National Defence, today met with Berislav Roncevic, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Croatia to discuss Canada-Croatia defence relations, the mission in Afghanistan and NATO membership.

"I am pleased the Republic of Croatia recognizes the importance of the successful completion of NATO's mission in Afghanistan, and Canada commends their commitment to defending freedom and democracy in the world," said Minister O'Connor. "Croatia is an important ally in stabilizing and rebuilding Afghanistan."

"The Republic of Croatia and Canada have been working for many years side-by-side in different operations and we would like to enhance our relations in the future," said Minister Roncevic. "Croatia hopes to capitalize on these relations and play a greater role on the international scene and become a full fledge NATO member."

Croatia has participated in NATO's International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan since 2003 and is the second largest non-NATO troop contributor to the mission. By the end of 2006, the Croatian Armed Forces will have 150 members in different locations in Afghanistan.
