DND: Sexual Assault Charges Laid in Relation to 1982 Incident

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Aug. 23, 2007) - After a joint investigation by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS) and the RCMP, charges have been laid in relation to sexual offences that occurred between 1982 and 1985 in Mill Cove, N.S.

Donald George Schweyer, 57 years old, of Halifax, has been charged under Section 264 (1) (1), sexual assault, of the Criminal Code of Canada (1983) and Section 156, indecent assault, of the Criminal Code of Canada (1971). Schweyer was a Boy Scout leader for the area of Mill Cove and all of the alleged offences occurred at Canadian Forces Station Mill Cove. Schweyer was a member of the Canadian Forces from 1970 to 2005. Schweyer retired from the Canadian Forces at the rank of Master Warrant Officer.

"It is good news that the investigators were able to trace the details of an incident that occurred more than 20 years ago" said Lt. Col. William Garrick, Commanding Officer of the CFNIS. "The Military Police take all allegations of sexual offences seriously and are prepared to hear from anyone else who may have information or been personally victimized."

The investigation began after the Chester RCMP received a complaint from a man alleging that he was sexually assaulted by Schweyer when the man was 12 years old. Further investigation by the CFNIS and the RCMP revealed that more than one victim was assaulted by the accused. This investigation is ongoing to determine if there are any additional victims. If you have any information contact the CFNIS at 1-888-253-5335, any RCMP Detachment or your local police.

Schweyer was released from custody with conditions pending a court appearance at the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia in Bridgewater on September 26, 2007.

The CFNIS is an independent Military Police unit with the mandate to investigate serious and sensitive matters in relation to National Defence property, DND employees and CF personnel serving in Canada and around the world.
