Do Bamboo: Join the Greener Side

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 15, 2011) - A Greektown storeowner who specializes in bamboo products, including t-shirts made from the plant, is trying to raise awareness of its environmental benefits by encouraging people to sport pro-green "eco-logo" slogans on their chests, so he's offering to print them for free.

John Elias, owner of Do Bamboo at 764 Danforth Ave. & dobamboo.com, normally charges $10 for printing a pre-designed heat-transfer slogan on the shirts he sells. But in order to draw attention to the fact that bamboo fibre clothing is a better alternative to cotton, he's offering to print catchy pro-green phrases on the shirts he sells for no extra charge.

"People get a kick out of personalizing their shirts. One of the most popular is 'Will work for trees'. We just want to encourage people to think about protecting the environment," Mr. Elias said.

Although bamboo — like any fibre, such as cotton — does require the use of chemicals in its processing, bamboo requires less use of other resources like water to grow and harvest, he says. Other benefits bamboo has for the environment is that it is efficient at scrubbing carbon from the atmosphere and replenishing itself naturally, something cotton can't do. There is progress being made in improving the processing of bamboo into fibre, he says, noting that a technology that breaks down bamboo using natural enzymes is being developed.

Having recently relocated to a larger store in the Greektown area after two years in a small shop further east, Mr. Elias will also be getting into the community spirit during the upcoming Taste Of The Danforth festival by offering shirts with slogans supporting the weekend event.

The environmental message is one he feels strongly about and an appreciation of sustainable manufacturing is part of what drove him to specialize in a surprisingly wide range of products that can be made from the unique bamboo plant. His store offers clothing for babies to adults, bedding, towels and accessories made from bamboo.
