Doctors Medical Center Joins VHA Inc. to Leverage Collaborative Networking Opportunities and Drive Clinical Improvement

IRVING, TX--(Marketwire - March 15, 2010) - Doctors Medical Center (DMC), a 189-bed hospital in San Pablo, Calif., has joined VHA Inc., in order tap into its clinical improvement programs and member networks.

As recently as two years ago, DMC was struggling to keep its doors open due to increasing industry pressures and clinical quality issues. However, its new management team has completely revived the hospital and sees the linkage to VHA as an opportunity to continue that journey and collaborate to drive additional improvements and long-term, sustainable results.

"Joining VHA connects Doctors Medical Center to top industry leaders and experts who can help us continue to enhance our ability to serve our community. I'm looking forward to utilizing VHA's networks to collaborate with other hospitals and identify solutions to the common challenges facing the health care community," said Joseph A. Stewart, chief executive officer at DMC. "Additionally, VHA offers clinical improvement programs that will help us enhance the quality of care we offer."

In addition to joining VHA's national network, DMC is also joining VHA's regional network, VHA West Coast, which links more than 90 hospitals in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and one hospital in Oregon and Washington. These organizations leverage their knowledge, economic influence and resources to help each other improve.

VHA is also known for assisting hospitals with supply chain management issues, and Stewart acknowledged that DMC may explore options to use VHA for group purchasing when the contract with its current GPO is up for renewal.

"VHA creates connections and energy that enable hospitals to accelerate their performance improvement," said Rick Barnett, senior vice president of VHA's West Coast office, located in Pleasanton, Calif. "Our focus in working with DMC will be to enable the organization to improve its clinical and operational efficiency, but we believe benefits will flow both ways, as other members in the VHA network draw upon the ideas that DMC staff have for improving health care within their community."
