Doctors and Other Public Health Care Advocates to Protest Illegal Billing Outside Private Clinic

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Aug. 20, 2012) - Physicians and other public health care advocates will gather outside the Cambie Surgery Centre on Monday, August 20, as the Medical Services Commission's 30-day deadline given to two Vancouver private clinics to end their illegal billing practices expires - a deadline that a spokesperson for the centre and the Specialist Referral Clinic has said will be ignored.

The MSC audit, released July 18, found that within a sample period of less than 30 days, almost $500,000 in extra-billing had taken place - at least $66,000 of which appeared to be illegal double billing. This means that in addition to collecting these fees from the patient, a claim was also made for payment from B.C.'s Medical Services Plan.

What: News conference
When: Monday, August 20th, 10:00 a.m.
Where: Cambie Surgery Clinic, 2836 Ash Street, Vancouver, B.C.
