Doerksen Releases 'Alberta by Design'

Policy platform focuses on a sustainable plan for beyond tomorrow

RED DEER, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 23, 2006) - Speaking with supporters at a fundraising breakfast in Red Deer today, Progressive Conservative Association leadership candidate Victor Doerksen announced the release of his policy platform, called Alberta By Design.

"There are some fundamental things we all hope our future will include - a better quality of life, economic prosperity, clean and safe communities, strong family bonds and health and happiness, both for ourselves and for our children and grandchildren," Doerksen said. "My vision of Alberta begins with these wishes and from a real belief that we, as Albertans, have the ability to make this future for ourselves."

Alberta by Design starts with six vision statements:

- An Alberta with safe, quality water that meets the needs of all citizens.

- An Alberta with accessible, affordable and sustainable universal health care.

- An Alberta with plentiful opportunities for families to connect and to participate in a meaningful community life.

- An Alberta that provides global solutions and global leaders. Alberta can and should expect to develop Nobel Prize winners and provide technological solutions that help the world.

- An Alberta with an economic infrastructure that encourages the development of new ideas, new technologies, and new business opportunities.

- An Alberta with an environment that adds to our quality of life, both now and for the future.

"I have called it a sustainable plan for beyond tomorrow, because as we all know, while we have been blessed by the good fortune of our resources, we won't be able to sustain that good fortune without a design for the future." Doerksen said. "This is a policy platform that is sustainable, financially viable and detailed and addresses both current challenges and the roadmap for reaching the vision."

The plan outlines clearly defined steps grouped around the platform pillars Doerksen announced at his campaign launch:

- Meaningful Party Membership - including more concrete methods for Party members to take part in developing policy and participating in government.

- Renewed Fiscal Discipline - with a focus on ensuring our finite resource revenue is turned into sustainable assets for the long term.

- Accountability in Health Care - including actions to ensure our health care system remains viable for the future.

- Supporting Parental Roles - ensuring parents and communities are supported in providing a strong foundation for families.

- Conservation- building a healthy and thriving environment for the long term.

Other policies outlined include plans for the environment, accounting for non-renewable resources, education, health care, seniors and infrastructure. Beyond the policies already announced on the Health Care Trust and programs for supporting parents, Doerksen said further announcements over the next four weeks will provide further detail on these policies.

"There are many directions this province can take over the next 10 to 20 years," Doerksen said. "My strength is my approach to understand the issues, and from that understanding, make a decision, take a path and stick to it."
