Doha Hotel's Staff Nurse Earns Multiple Awards for Exemplary Service

Tragedy at the Doha Marriott Hotel Becomes Mary Jane Amora's Finest Hour

DOHA, QATAR--(Marketwired - Mar 25, 2014) - It is said that times of crisis are when a person reveals her true character. And while Mary Jane Amora, the staff nurse at the Doha Marriott Hotel, has long demonstrated an admirable zeal for her work, it was a fatal bus crash that truly put the spotlight on her dedication. From her round-the-clock nursing, to her ceaseless emotional support, Amora proved that some jobs transcend duty, and for that she is receiving two prestigious awards.

Amora joined the staff of this Doha business hotel in 2009 and quickly established herself as a valuable member of the team. She turned the nurse's office, for example, into a private clinic where patients could receive top-quality care. She also established protocols for first-aid training and streamlining medical-insurance procedures.

But when the hotel's staff was involved in a fatal bus accident in April 2013, Amora went above and beyond the call of duty. Two associates were killed, three were in critical condition and 18 were injured. And it was Amora who tended to all of the survivors. Amora visited her hospitalized colleagues on a daily basis, sometimes even providing medical care along the way, and she routinely dropped in on less severely injured associates who were recovering at home. She helped coordinate follow-up appointments and navigate insurance claims, even when language or cultural barriers stood in the way. Most impressively, she did it all without ever being asked.

The Doha Marriott Hotel stands out among other hotels near Souq Waqif for its superior guest experience, and Amora's recent actions prove that the staff is largely responsible for the property's excellent reputation. In response to her personal dedication, Amora received Hotelier Middle East's "Unsung Hero of the Year" award on October 30, 2013. Sponsored by A. Ronai LLC, the award is one of the most popular, and it is significant honor for Amora.

It is also, however, just the beginning. As Amora continued to oversee the convalescence of injured associates, she was successfully nominated by her hotel's HR Director and General Manager for the J. Willard Marriott Award of Excellence. This honor was awarded to just nine associates out of countless nominations and will be presented to Amora on May 14, 2014 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center.

While the hotel continues to offer some of the finest accommodations in Doha as it recovers from this tragedy, Amora is carving out a new role for herself as a resident nurse who is also a competent and comforting substitute for family. "In Doha we don't have any family," Amora explains. "We are all expats, so we have to become each other's family and help each other. That is why I don't mind if I have to work a little late, or if I have people calling me at home. I just try my best and rely on the help of all my colleagues."
