Don't Hit the Road Without Your Leathers Warns Swinton Bike Insurance

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - May 28, 2012) - Swinton, the UK's leading supplier of bike insurance, is advising bikers to wear protective clothing even in hot summer weather.

Riders should remember that wearing the right protective clothing is important all year round and could prevent a life-changing injury.

Many variations of protective motorcycle gear are available and can help to keep motorcyclists cool on even the hottest days.

Bikers should remember that the better the fit, the better the ride. Poorly fitting bike gear can cause a lack of concentration which can lead to an increased risk of being involved in an accident, so always try before you buy a new set of protective clothing.

Swinton's tips for motorcyclists on what to wear in the summer are:

  • Leathers are perfect for the summer but riders should also consider carrying waterproof protection to prevent getting cold if it turns wet during your ride.

  • Jeans should be heavy duty denim with a Kevlar weave to provide abrasion protection;

  • Helmets must fit securely and have a 5-star SHARP rating - this is the Government's safety rating system to help riders know which helmet provides the best protection;

  • In the event of falling off a motorcycle, most riders reach out to protect themselves. That's why gloves are a must all year round. Lightweight summer gloves provide protection whilst keeping hands dry.

  • Sturdy boots should always be worn and have a minimum sole thickness of 4mm. Never wear flip flops or open toed sandals when riding a motorcycle.

Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bikes said: "The damage that can be done from not wearing protective clothing when riding really isn't worth the risk. Bikers who don't like wearing heavy winter leathers on hot days should invest in summer leathers. If you come off your bike it could harm you and other road users, significantly increase motorcycle insurance premiums and result in the owner of the vehicle paying out large sums of money to repair damage to the motorbike."
