Don't Let November Dampen Your Spirits Urges Swinton Insurance

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2011) - Swinton, the UK's leading home insurance broker is urging home owners to take extra precaution this November as the damp weather sets in for the winter.

Damp can cause damage to a wide range of things in the home including structural damage, floors, walls, window frames and can even be a health risk to those living in such damp conditions.

Rising damp is the most common form and is caused by moisture from the ground rising up through the walls, but there are a number of other types including penetrating damp caused by moisture leaking through outside walls and roofs, and condensation which is often found in bathrooms and kitchens.

Once damp sets in, it can be extremely difficult for owners to rid their home of it, and can not only cause damage to the house itself, but also possessions within the home such as carpets, curtains, and even electrical items.

Buildings insurance is compulsory to anyone with a mortgage, but taking out additional contents insurance policy will protect home owners against any damage caused to personal belongings within a home.

Those taking out insurance policies must also remember that as a home insurance customer there is a duty of care that must be adhered to, and any damage caused by lack of maintenance could result in them being unable to claim. With that in mind, Swinton has listed a few simple steps to help prevent against pesky damp problems.

Swinton's top damp banishing steps:

  • Keep a look out for staining or cracks on internal walls or plaster – this could be a sign of rising damp and is best acted upon sooner rather than later

  • Make sure homes are insulated and draft proofed

  • Refrain from drying washing on radiators

  • Check gutters and roofs for cracks – rainwater that spills from gutters or roofs can cause a wall to become saturated allowing moisture to pass through to the interior of your home

  • Wipe down windows and sills that are prone to condensation

  • Ventilate bathrooms and kitchens daily

  • Keep a continuous low heat in rooms during the winter months, even if there is no one in

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Director at Swinton Insurance said "The winter brings many problems for home owners, and it tends to start with damp problems and leakages. Though they may not start out as an emergency, if left they can have detrimental effects to buildings, belongings and in a worst case scenario, damage the health of a person. Home owners must be aware of these problems and ensure they are fully protected by their insurance provider."
