Dot-ca reaches 500,000 registration milestone

Being Canadian online more popular than ever Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 7, 2005) - The 500,000th dot-ca Internet domain name has been registered, according to figures released today by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA).

The steep growth of dot-ca domain name registrations confirms that dot-ca's popularity with Canadians is stronger than ever since CIRA began administering the 60,000 dot-ca Internet domain name registry in December 2000.

In 2004, the number of dot-ca domain names registered rose 24%, from 389,216 in 2003, to 482,684 registrations. In contrast, the number of dot-com domain names registered by Canadians rose only 10% from 1,043,043 in 2003 to 1,144,801 in 2004. Today, the total number of dot-ca domain name registrations reached the half-million mark. Since January 1, 2005 some 17,316 new dot-ca domain names have been registered, representing an average of about 275 new registrations per day.

"The ongoing success of dot-ca points to the value that Canadian individuals, businesses, and associations see in dot-ca domain names. Dot-ca names work anywhere in the world and are recognized as Canadian," explains Bernard Turcotte, CIRA's President and CEO. "They are easy to register and can cost less than dot-coms when registered through many of our 80+ CIRA Certified Registrars."

Dot-ca domain names became widely available to individuals and organizations in December 2000 when CIRA began managing the dot-ca registry. To register a dot-ca domain name, an organization or individual must be able to demonstrate that it meets CIRA's Canadian presence criteria.

Unlike dot-com domain names that can be registered by anyone in the world, dot-ca names characterize and define an online presence and brand because they can only be registered by those who meet CIRA's Canadian presence criteria. Many of Canada's most successful companies have moved to dot-ca for these very reasons.

In addition, many organizations that have a distinct Canadian product or service offering find that a unique Canadian presence on the Web helps drive sales. Canadian consumers generally prefer to deal in Canadian dollars and have their goods shipped from a Canadian address. For many Canadians, dot-ca can provide that reassurance because it establishes a sense of trust through familiarity.
