Dr. Brenda Herschbach Jarrell From Choate, Hall & Stewart Named 2015 "Top Woman of Law" by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - Oct 20, 2015) -  Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP announced today that Dr. Brenda Herschbach Jarrell, co-chair of the firm's Life Sciences and Intellectual Property Groups, has been named a "Top Woman of Law" by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly for her outstanding accomplishments in the legal field. The prestigious award is given to a small group of "exceptional" women who are pioneers, educators, trailblazers, and role models. Dr. Jarrell will receive her award on October 28, 2015.

As co-chair of Choate's Life Sciences and Intellectual Property Groups, Dr. Jarrell brings extensive technical credentials and scientific training -- spanning multiple disciplines from synthetic organic chemistry to molecular biology to theoretical quantum physics -- to her practice. She is well versed in many technologies in the biotech, pharmaceutical, and specialty chemical industries, including cutting edge areas such as immuno-oncology, gene editing, and nanotherapeutics.

Dr. Jarrell was singled out for this award because of her unique ability to understand the intersection of chemical and biological sciences, business, and the law, which enables her to help clients -- many of whom represent the future of the life sciences industry -- lower the risks associated with developing and managing intellectual property, technology licensing, joint venture collaborations, and intellectual property rights resulting from those scientific collaborations.  She also helps leading investment firms find and assess the most promising new opportunities.

"Brenda is in a class of her own when it comes to helping clients protect their complex and potentially groundbreaking scientific discoveries," said Charles Cheever, co-managing partner of Choate, Hall & Stewart. "She is widely recognized as one of the top attorneys in the country for cutting edge life sciences companies to turn to for sophisticated IP strategies to protect their most valuable assets. We are thrilled that she is being recognized for her incredible contributions to the legal and personalized medicine fields."

Dr. Jarrell is regularly recognized as a top lawyer in her field, including by Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America, Patent Expert Guide 2015, Managing Intellectual Property, IAM Patent 1000, and Massachusetts Super Lawyers (top 50 women). In 2012, Dr. Jarrell was named the Boston "Lawyer of the Year" for Biotechnology Law by Best Lawyers. Managing Intellectual Property routinely names her an "IP Star" and among the "Top 250 Women in IP" nationwide. In 2005, she was selected by the National Law Journal for their 40 Under 40 list of the most accomplished young attorneys in the country.

Dr. Jarrell received her J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1998, her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of California, San Francisco in 1993, and both her A.B. and M.A. in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in 1988.
