Dr. Howard Alper Reappointed as Chair of the Science, Technology and Innovation Council

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 10, 2012) - The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, along with the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), today announced the reappointment of Dr. Howard Alper as Chair of the Science, Technology and Innovation Council (STIC).

"Dr. Alper's active involvement in the international scientific community will continue to benefit Canada's innovation system," said Minister Paradis. "Through his leadership role, the Council explores science, technology and innovation issues while ensuring that Canada maintains a strong international reputation, as seen in its second State of the Nation report."

"Dr. Alper's expert knowledge is key as we continue to implement our government's science and technology strategy," said Minister of State Goodyear. "His dedication to advancing Canada's innovation agenda is an inspiration, and I am delighted that he has accepted another term as Chair of STIC."

Dr. Alper has served as Chair of STIC since its inception in October 2007. The role of the Council is to provide the government with evidence-based policy advice on science, technology and innovation and to produce regular reports measuring Canada's science, technology and innovation performance against international standards of excellence. The second of these reports, State of the Nation 2010-Canada's Science, Technology and Innovation System, was released in June 2011.

In addition to his role as Chair of STIC, Dr. Alper is a distinguished professor at the University of Ottawa, where his research in the areas of organic and inorganic chemistry has potential applications in such industries as pharmaceutical, petrochemical and commodity chemicals. He is also a member of the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for International Science and Engineering and was named President of the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Alper has served as chair of several boards and committees, including Chair of the Board of Governors of the Council of Canadian Academies, member of the Science Advisory Committee of the World Economic Forum and Co-Chair of InterAcademy Panel, a global network consisting of over 105 science academies.

Dr. Alper has received numerous awards and prizes, including the first Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering, the most prestigious award of its kind in Canada. In 1996, he was appointed as a Titular Member of the European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities, and in 1999, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2002, France bestowed Dr. Alper with the award of Officer in the National Order of Merit.

Dr. Alper holds a Bachelor of Science from Sir George Williams University and a Ph.D. from McGill University. Dr. Alper was also a Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University. His other prestigious fellowships include the E.W.R. Steacie, Guggenheim and Killam.
