NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Aug 31, 2015) - Dr. Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., CHES, is a highly regarded Physician, an Associate Professor of Public Health Practice in Health Policy and Management, clinical assistant professor of Family and Community Medicine, and Global Health Director at New York Medical College.

Dr. Murthy did her undergraduate work at Osmania University, India. Dr. Murthy went on to receive a Master's in Management degree and a Masters of Public Health from New York University. Ms. Murthy has been on the Dean's List at NYU Steinhart School of Education and named Public Service Scholar at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of NYU. Upon graduation, Padmini Murthy went on to earn her M.D. from Nagarjuna University, India and also holds a DGO (Diploma in Gynecology and Obstetrics) from Gulbarga University, and did her residency in Ob/ Gyn from Gulbarga, India.

Additionally, Dr. Murthy is a Certified Health Education Specialist and spent time as visiting research scholar at the London School of Tropical Medicine. In addition she also has done doctoral course work in Public Health at Walden University

Dr. Padmini Murthy's 28-year career has spanned many areas of public and private healthcare throughout many countries. Dr. Murthy is the N.G.O. (Non-Governmental Organization) Alternate Representative of Medical Women International Association to the United Nations and serves as a consultant to the U.N. as well. Dr. Murthy serves as Member at Large of the Executive Committee of the NGO CSW Committee of New York, also at the United Nations. In this role, Dr. Murthy meets with U.N. Ambassadors and other U.N. officials to discuss women's health issues and challenges. In the forefront of educational trends, she is responsible for the organization of workshops and seminars throughout the world to discuss women's health issues and possible solutions to the challenges they face.

Dr. Padmini Murthy is the recipient of numerous well-deserved honors and awards. She has received the Sojourner Truth Pin (awarded to women who excel in community service), the National Council of Women's U.S.A. Distinguished Leadership Award, she was named Public Service Scholar by the Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service at NYU, received a Certificate for Excellence at NYU, and was named Best Physician in the Workplace by the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Murthy was honored by her students as an Outstanding Teacher, having helped to inspire them to pursue careers in global health. In 2012, Dr. Murthy was invited to deliver the 16th Marie Catchatoor's Oration Lecture in recognition of her work on women's health by the Association of Medical Women in India. She was also named woman of the year 2012 - 2013 by the National Association of Professional Women.

In Seoul, South Korea, at the Triennial Medical Women's Conference in August of 2013, Dr. Padmini Murthy was presented the Jhirad Oration Award, an award given once every three years to an outstanding female physician. This award made Dr. Murthy the first American female physician to receive this honor from the Medical Women's Association, whose members are representative of over a hundred countries.

Dr. Murthy was invited to give a lecture at Presidential Diversity Forum at Union College in NY and this inspired the students to launch a Safe Motherhood Initiative and send Mama Kits to help women In Malawi. This was the first time students from Union College, after listening to an invited speaker, were motivated to launch a project to promote social responsibility.

In April 2015 Murthy was inducted as an Inaugural Fellow of American Medical Women's Association Centennial meeting. In May 2015 Murthy was named "Millennium Milestone Maker Awardee" at the 9th Annual Women's Symposium at Sias University in China in recognition of her work in promoting the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.

Dr. Murthy is a widely published author. She is the author and editor of "Women's Global Health and Human Rights," a book used worldwide as a reference and textbook. Dr. Murthy has been appointed to three consecutive terms as chair of the Committee on Women's Rights of the American Public Health Association (APHA), one of the largest professional organizations comprised of physicians and public health care professionals in the world. In 2012, she began her term as a member of the Governing Council representing the International Health Section at the APHA. Dr. Murthy serves as a peer reviewer and associate editor for BMC Journal of Public Health and the Global Journal of Medicine and Public Health. She is also a reviewer for APHA in the International Health Section and the Committee of Women's Rights. Murthy currently serves as Program co-chair of the International Health Section of APHA. Additionally, she blogs for Medscape and APHA.

Dr. Murthy has spearheaded the Safe Motherhood Malawi initiative at NYMC and the team has raised funds to build a maternity waiting home and collected hospital supplies for a rural clinic. She has also undertaken initiatives and has been instrumental in working with other NGOs collecting drugs, medical equipment and other necessary for Grenada, India, Nepal and Liberia.

Currently Murthy is working as a team member of My Sisters' Health Watch which is an initiative launched By The Permanent Mission of Grenada to the United Nations in March 2015 under the promoting the health and wellbeing of Women based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3 which is to "Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well Being For All at All Ages."

Dr. Padmini Murthy's research interests include women's health and human rights, promoting practice of safe motherhood and activism to improve the health of women in underserved communities, with a focus on social determinants of health, and the promotion of distance education and social media in the practice of Public Health.
